Tips To Stay Healthy After Cancer
Cancer is a life-changing experience that can affect your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. After completing your treatment, you may wonder how to stay healthy and prevent the cancer from coming back or developing a new one.
While there is no guarantee that you can avoid cancer recurrence or a second cancer, there are some steps you can take to improve your health and quality of life after cancer.
Here Are Tips To Help You Stay Healthy After Cancer.
1. Exercise
Exercise is an important part of healthy living. Being physically active during and after cancer treatment can help:
1- Reduce anxiety and fatigue
2- Improve mood and self-esteem
3- Strengthen your muscles and bones
4- Lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers
5- Maintain a healthy weight
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming) and two sessions of strength training (such as lifting weights or doing resistance exercises) per week.
Talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program, especially if you have any medical conditions or limitations.
2. Eat a Balanced Diet:
Eating a balanced diet can help you get the nutrients you need to support your immune system, repair your tissues, and prevent chronic diseases.
A balanced diet includes:
1- Lots of fruits and vegetables, especially those that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber
2- Whole grains, such as brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, and whole wheat bread
3- Lean proteins, such as fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, and legumes
4- Healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish
5- Limited amounts of red meat, processed meat, saturated fat, trans fat, added sugar, and salt
Avoid alcohol or drink only in moderation.
Alcohol can increase your risk of some cancers, such as breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon cancer.
If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to no more than one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of some cancers, such as breast, prostate, endometrial, colorectal, and kidney cancer.
It can also increase your risk of other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and joint pain.
To maintain a healthy weight:
1- Balance your calorie intake with your physical activity level
2- Choose nutrient-dense foods over calorie-dense foods
3- Avoid skipping meals or following fad diets
4- Eat slowly and mindfully
5- Drink plenty of water
6- Seek professional help if you have trouble managing your weight
